World Blood Donor Day
Are you a Hero?
On June 14th, blood donors from across the globe wore crimson-red with pride as they celebrated World Blood Donor Day, under the theme “Every Blood Donor is a Hero”. Hospitals, blood banks and blood donation enthusiasts, worldwide, conducted events to thank unpaid blood donor for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products.
Namely, Princess Margaret Hospital had the honor of hosting our annual World Blood Donor Day Ceremony during a Corporate Blood Drive sponsored and organized by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity & One Blood.
During the ceremony, donors were recognized for their unselfish commitment to saving lives and were presented with certificates. We were privileged to have Mrs. Gerarda Eijkemans, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Representative for The Bahamas & Turks & Caicos Islands, bring a special address to our guests at the ceremony. Proceeding Mrs. Eijkemans’ was Mr. Charles Sealy, CEO of Doctors Hospital, followed by Mr. Delon Brennen; Deputy Chief Medical Office for the Ministry of Health.
Organizers, invited guests and onlookers all shared in the spirit of the day by voluntarily donating a pint of blood.
Every year, it becomes increasingly important to raise awareness of the global need for voluntary blood donors who give blood regularly. Often times, mental pictures of sharp needles and unsightly hospital equipment blur the undeniable truth that when you donate blood, you help save lives. The world needs more individuals to adopt this heroic task. The world needs you.
