This procedure is done to show the esophagus, stomach and the first section of the small bowel. The patient is given a drink consisting of Barium Sulphate. This contrast is used to show the esophagus, stomach and small bowels.
There are special instructions for children and adults when preparing for a barium meal.
Do not have anything to eat or drink after 12 midnight on the night before the exam.
After the examination, please drink lots of water and increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet. This will help to flush or remove the barium out of the system.
Baby age range: 0 – 3 months: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam. Example: if the last feeding was 5:00 a.m. Nothing to eat or drink until after the exam.
